What is Menopause Diarrhea?

Some girls may have become aware that they are able to get diarrhea or loose bowels during their menstrual period, while they might be constipated the rest of the month. The diarrhea is due to the hormones, estrogen, and progesterone, which women produce during their menstrual periods. The same is also true when women are entering into menopause. The hormonal changes that are linked with menopause can result in diarrhea; that is according to the Mayo Clinic.

In a report on MotherNature.com, Dr. Marvin Schuster, the director of the Division of Digestive Diseases at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and a professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, has stressed out that “gut disturbances” are ordinary in menstruating women. The most common problem is diarrhea, and it normally takes place during the first two days of a woman’s period. This is brought about by the bigger levels of progesterone and estrogen. When the hormone levels crest, this makes the colon muscles relax and rest. The same thing arises when a woman is in the menopause stage. In fact, her hormones may be entirely imbalanced at times, and this results in a number of symptoms, including diarrhea.

Moreover, Schuster in the MotherNature.com report clarifies and explains that the contractions that are made by the colon generally , diarrhea happens. This is also applicable to menopausal women who can experience very high levels of estrogen during the perimenopausal phase that leads up to menopause.

Dr. Betty Wang of Womensmentalhealth.org remarks that menopausal women occasionally take herbs such as flaxseed, which is a phytoestrogen, to manage and to control hot flashes. Phytoestrogens may be helpful in giving remedy to menopausal symptoms, but there can be unfavorable side effects, which may  include mild diarrhea, along with a distended abdomen, bloating and gas.
