Constant Diarrhea

Most people experience diarrhea sometime or the other in their life. But there are some who experience it very frequently. Diarrhea which continues for more than two weeks is termed as constant diarrhea or prolonged diarrhea. Most times it is difficult to determine the exact cause for diarrhea. But constant diarrhea could mean some serious health issue which needs to be addressed immediately. People who suffer from prolonged diarrhea fear to move out of their homes since the bout of diarrhea can occur at any time. There are many factors that contribute to this condition.

Factors that contribute to Constant Diarrhea

Constant diarrhea could be due to the presence of Intestinal Parasites. Parasites can be in the form of worms or single cell organisms that eat away the stools in your intestines. This is accompanied by pain and bloating or blood in stools.

People with lactose intolerance also develop diarrhea within a few hours of having milk and dairy based products. This is can be detected by doing a lactose breath test. Chronic diarrhea in such cases can be arrested by abstaining from all types of lactose based products including milk and dairy products.

People who suffer from Irritable Bowel System (IBS) are also a victim of prolonged diarrhea. This condition is mostly due to stress and certain types of food. It alternates between constipation and diarrhea. Change in diet, managing stress and medication can help cure this condition. But in certain cases even these do not help and the person has to live with it.

Medications like antibiotics, laxatives (if used frequently), and antacid drugs containing magnesium, drugs for high blood pressure can also irritate the bowels and cause a state of chronic diarrhea.

Treating Constant Diarrhea

Treatment for constant diarrhea can only be determined by a doctor. But there are certain things you can do to prevent or help in such conditions.

  1. Replenish your body of lost fluids by drinking plenty of water and avoid caffeine and alcohol as it dehydrates the body.
  2. Eat only those foods that are easily digestible by your body. If possible avoid eating solid food for a few days till the condition improves and then slowly include solids.
  3. Avoid any medications that may be causing diarrhea unless it is to cure some other serious illness. Take the advice of your doctor to see if he can recommend an alternative medicine for the illness.
